Purbajyoti Phukon

I am from India and currently a Fulbright Postdoctoral Researcher in the Tectonics and Geochronology group at UCSB. I earned my B.Sc. in Geology and M.Sc. in Applied Geology from Dibrugarh University, Assam, India. I completed my Ph.D. jointly at the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehradun, and the Department of Geology, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India. My research specializes in metamorphic petrology, geochronology, and continental tectonics, with a focus on the growth of the Himalayan orogen, metamorphism, deformation, exhumation of deep-seated rocks, and the evolution of shear zones. I employ multidisciplinary approaches, including the analysis of meso- and microstructures, phase equilibria modeling, and petrochronology of structurally controlled accessory mineral phases such as zircon, monazite, and titanite in crystalline rocks. In my postdoctoral research, I am investigating metamorphic CO₂ fluxes from the calc-silicates rocks of the Himalayan orogen during distinct geological epochs and their influence on the temporal variability of atmospheric CO₂ levels.
