To understand changes in the carbon cycle on both human and geological timescales, we need to understand how carbon, sulfur, oxygen, nutrients, and metals interact in the environment. In the NOISE Lab at UCSB, we seek to understand the mechanisms that have preserved organic carbon in anoxic sediments throughout Earth history, and we apply insights from those processes to investigate potential technologies for climate mitigation through net-negative CO2 removal.
