June 1 , 2009:

It is always a special occasion when one of our professors receives recognition from his/her peers. I am so pleased to announce that Professor Doug Burbank has been selected as the 2009 winner of the Don J. Easterbrook Distinguished Scientist Award by the Quaternary Geology and Geomorphology Division of the Geological Society of America.

The description of what it takes to earn this accolade is given below:
"An individual who has shown unusual excellence in published research, as demonstrated by a single paper of exceptional merit or a series of papers that have substantially increased knowledge in Quaternary geology or geomorphology, shall be designated the Don J. Easterbrook Distinguished Scientist. The intent of the Easterbrook Award is to recognize an individual whose research has constituted significant advancements in Quaternary geology and geomorphology."

This award, established in 1999, has been given 9 times. Our Department now has 1/3 of the recipients!!! Besides Doug, Professors Ed Keller and Tom Dunne have been honored as the Don J. Easterbrook Distinguished Scientist.

Congratulations Doug.  We are all very proud of your accomplishments.

Cheers from the Chair,
Ralph

Department Chair Ralph Archuleta , UCSB Department of Earth Science, proudly congratulates Professor David Lea, UCSB Earth Science, in being selected as a 2009 Leopold Leadership Fellow.

Many of you may be aware of David’s genuine concern that the science related to global climate change goes beyond the classroom. In winter and spring of 2007 David spearheaded a campus-wide program Science and Society program on global warming. Several years ago he initiated an upper division GE course (GS 130) on global warming so that all UCSB students would have the opportunity to understand the scientific framework for this important issue that will affect us for a very long time.
