UCSB Beach Cliff Erosion - Before, After, and During the January 2001 Storm

View north of UCSB Beach from top of cliff. Relate the four images by the patches of ice plant in upper left corner.

Talus accumulations at base of cliff in December 2000. Sand thickness is 1-2 m deeper in the December beach than in February. The whiteness of the cliff is how the siliceous siltstone looks when weathered. Note the small talus apron comprising small rock fragments along the base of the cliff in December 2000.

Cliff has been stripped of weathered rock in February by major January storm so that true rock colors are evident. All talus has been eroded from cliff base. A large, new rock slide in lower center is being attacked by waves here at a +4.29' high tide.

Cliff is attacked again in January 2002 by storm waves that strip loose rock and talus from cliff up to to height of 2-3 m at 5.3' high tide. ©AGS2001
