Features of the 1970 Volcanic Eruption Site, Jan Mayen

All photographs by Sylvester, 16 August 1973, unless otherwise noted

Steep front of an aa flow, which issued from Skrukkelia vent on the skyline. Photograph by C.A. Gløersen, 16 August 1973

Aa flow at the base of the escarpment below the 1970 eruption fissure. A standard-sized rock hammer sits upon a thin, ropey pahoehoe flow that lies upon the aa. In the background, black lava flowed down the escarpment upon older gray basaltic talus.

Patches of snow lie upon an extensive blanket of black basaltic tephra erupted from Siggurdbre crater on the left edge of the photograph. A puff of steam issues from the right side of Beerenberg, which is a single lava cone of a distinct basalt type perched on the crest of the main mountain mass of Beerenberg.

Hydrothermally altered tephra on the flank of Skrukkelia. Photographed by C.A. Gløersen, 16 August 1973.
