Day Three, from Nankoweap Creek to Vishnu Canyon. I was with Kenton Grua in "Emerald Isle." We stopped at the confluence of the Colorado and Little Colorado rivers at Mile 61.5 where everyone got into a big mudbath/fight. We hiked up Carbon Canyon, crossed over the divide between Carbon and Lava canyons, and Rod Nash and I looked at geologic things down Lava Canyon. The memorable rapids were Tanner (4), Unkar (6), Neville's (6), Hance (8), and Sockdolager (8). Hance was a long, complicated rapid where we had to go around a big rock, then pull hard back into the middle of the channel. We had a great ride right through the middle of Sockdolager. Camped on a sand bar at Mile 81, across from Vishnu Canyon above Grapevine Rapid. Thunder and lightning at night but no rain. Sand in hair, ears, and everything else next morning; wish I had set up a tent. Enchiladas for dinner.
