Research Interests

My research focuses on two areas: the Precambrian history of life and its relationship to environmental change, and the 'Cambrian explosion' of animals. Specific topics include reconstructing relationships of early animal and protistan problematica, understanding the effects of taphonomic biases on patterns in the fossil record, and using the geobiological record to understand the evolution of biomineralization. Field, museum, and lab studies are integral to my research.
