| Basic research interests are observing, analyzing and predicting strong motion from earthquakes. Following up on these interests involves dissecting the problem into more manageable pieces: collecting data, modeling the earthquake process itself, and understanding wave propagation in heterogeneous geological structures. | |||

| Research interests center on understanding the history of life during the Archean and Proterozoic primarily through the study of stromatolites and microbial fossils. Analogs from Phanerozoic to recent deposits are also examined to provide better understanding of pre-Phanerozoic examples. | |||

| Research centers on understanding the chemical and physical changes that occur in sediments from time of deposition up to and including deep burial and uplift (diagenesis). Identification of subsurface chemical reactions, sources and sinks of material involved, and quantifying rates and magnitudes of material movement. | |||

| Professor. Tectonic geomorphology, collisional orogens, sedimentation and tectonics, surface processes. | |||
| Research focuses on 1) quantification of the interactions among climate, erosion, and tectonics in present-day orogenesis and landscape evolution; 2) interactions of folds, faults, and depositional systems; 3) evolution of collisional mountain belts; and 4) kinematics of thrust faulting and continental transtension. Most projects combine extensive field observations with geochronology, analysis of digital topography, geodesy, and structural and stratigraphic analyses. | |||

| Basic research focuses on stratigraphy and tectonincs of volcanoplutonic arcs, and controls of tectonics and eustacy on sedimentation in active margin basins. The work integrates sedimentological, volcanological, structural and geochronological data from Mesozoic continental and island arc successions to better understand the interaction between volcanism, tectonics, and sedimentation. | |||

| Assistant Professor. Hydrogeology, Agueous Geochemistry | |||
| Research interests lie in the general field of aqueous geochemistry and center on: 1) the transport of water and dissolved material in groundwater, surface waters, and the coastal ocean; 2) how flow patterns affect water quality; 3) gas exchange across the air-water interface; 4) climate change during the last 30,000 yr. These questions are examined using experiments conducted by introducing chemical tracers into the water bodies, plus analysis of flow patterns, residence times, and mixing rates inferred from the distribution of natural and anthropogenic tracers. | |||

| Research revolves around studying the processes that cause stable isotopes of hydrogen, oxygen, carbon, nitrogen and silicon to be distributed differentially in biological systems, and applying understanding of those processes to interpretation of stable isotope ratios of fossilized biogenic materials. | |||

| Interests lie in the general fields of structural geology and tectonics and are focused on deformational and thermal processes within the continental lithosphere. Research is mainly in the field of Extensional Tectonics and is focused on exactly how continents rift and the relationship between extension and magmatism.Projects generally involve detailed geologic mapping of critical areas followed by appropriate laboratory measurements (e.g., radiometric dating, geochemical analyses) and numerical modeling in order to better understand the structural and/or thermal process under study. | |||
