We encourage teachers to bring their classes to visit the
Earth Science department. Tours typically include a visit to the Bancroft
mineral display followed by a classroom presentation by one of the Department
faculty, graduate students or staff. Presentation topics include rocks
and
minerals, Santa Barbara geology, fossils (including dinosaurs, early mammals
and early plants), history of life, plate tectonics, mid-ocean ridge
geology
(including black smokers, tube worms and submarine lava flows), earthquakes
and volcanoes. Presentations are customized for the student's age and
areas
of interest. Due to room constraints, we must limit visiting class size
to approximately 30 students. It is possible to accommodate larger groups
if we split the class into smaller groups and rotate them through several
presentations. Another popular option is to visit several UCSB departments
on the same trip.
Call (805) 893-3471 or e-mail
UCSB Earth Science Outreach for
more information on scheduling a visit to Earth Science. Available
presentations and scheduling depend on faculty, student, staff and room
schedules so please call well ahead of time. |
