MacOrogeny

MacOrogeny is an interactive program for the Macintosh that illustrates the major orogenic (mountain-building) events effecting North America in the past 500 million years. MacOrogeny was developed in the early 90s by Professor Bruce Tiffney with the assistance of several students, and is curently only available for the Macintosh. If there is sufficient interest, we will create a cross-platform version of the program. To express your interest, E-mail the Cybercurator (cybercurator@magic.geol.ucsb.edu). Since this program is in "Beta-test-stage", if you discover any glitches (and Murphy's Law dictates that you will), we would appreciate your communicating them to the cybercurator. .

Each orogeny is illustrated with animated plate motion diagrams. The diagrams illustrate the motion of the plates involved, the effects of changing sea-level and tectonic uplift, the areas of active mountain building, erosion and deposition, plus a running timescale.

Additional information for each orogeny is provided by detailed diagrams and explanations of key features.
