40Ar/39Ar Geochronology (Argon)

  Mass Analyzer Products 216 with Baur-Signer source and Johnston MM1 electron multiplier and Faraday cup detectors is integrated into a fully automated gas extraction line with custom furnace and automated 36-bucket sample chamber.
 
 

Electron Microprobe (Probe)

Fully automated Cameca SX-50 fitted with 5 wavelength-dispersive
detectors and a PGT X-ray energy dispersive spectrometer. Lab also has over 100 reference
standards.
 

X-Ray Diffraction (XRD)

  1995 Philips X-Ray Powder Diffractometer model X'Pert-MPD with Philips PC-Rietveld software.
 
 

Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)

  JEOL JSM-6300V digital scanning electron microscope, with secondary electron, backscattered electron, orientation contrast and cathodoluminescence imaging capabilities. The SEM is also fitted with a Nordlys 2 electron back-scatter diffraction detector for crystal orientation mapping and a Tracor Xray energy spectrometer. A fully equipped sample preparation facility is also available.
 
 

Heavy Radiogenic Isotope Mass Spectrometer

  Finnigan MAT 261 thermal ionization mass spectrometer optimized for heavy isotopes with a six Faraday cup multi-collector, ion-counting SEM collector and updated data acquisition software.
 
 

Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (ICPMS) and additional instruments

 

Finnigan Element 2 High Resolution Double Focusing Sector ICPMS used for high precision elemental ratios in carbonates and trace element determinations in seawater and marine organisms. The VG UV microprobe 266nm laser ablation system can be coupled with the Element 2 for elemental ratio determinations in solid fish otoliths and marine gastropod statoliths.

The ICPMS (located in Woodhouse Lab) is now managed by MSI as a recharge lab along with other equipment. The MSI analytical instruments lab has recently acquired an IsoPrime dual inlet gas isotope MS with various automatic input prep systems for carbonates sample , gas samples in glass tubes (CO2, O2, N2, H2), and water samples for equilibration analyses (Also located in Woodhouse Lab). There are numerous other instruments that may be useful to students in our department (Location in the new Marine Science Research Building).
 

 

Stable Isotope Ratio Mass Spec For Carbonates (IRMS-C)

  Finnigan MAT 251 with an carbonate auto-sampler, dual inlet analysis of CO2, and small sample capability is used to study carbon and oxygen isotopes in carbonates.
 
 

Gas Chromatograph (Gas C)

  Shimadzu GC-8A and Shimadzu GC-14A with custom automated sample extraction.
 
 

Experimental Lava Viscometer Instrument System (ELVIS)

  Custom instrument for lava viscosity studies. Apparatus features a custom 1800° furnace and rheometer system, digital motor control, precision torque sensors, and custom data acquisition software. More info
 
 

Paleomagnetics Lab (P Mag)

  Geofyzica Brno Kappabridge 2.0 susceptibility bridge, Molspin spinner magnetometer, alternating field and thermal demagnetization systems, ARM and IRM capabilities.
 
 

Cathodoluminescence Microscope (Luminoscope)

  For use on uncovered thin sections. Certain minerals emit light in the visible spectrum under luminescence. Common uses: highlights complex zoning in minerals not otherwise visible with standard petrographic techniques, especially carbonate and silica cements.

Materials Research Laboratory (MRL)

  The Materials Research Laboratory in the School of Engineering houses facilities used by earth scientists: three Rigaku X-ray diffractometers, three NMR spectrometers, a Nicolet-Magna 850 infrared and Raman spectrometer, three JEOL transmission electron microscopes, two scanning electron microscopes, an atomic-force microscope, an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) atomic emission spectrometer, and a BET porosimiter.
